Ways to increase PC performance in Windows 10

Although Windows 10 is a fast operating system, its performance will start degrading at some point due to many factors, including compatibility issues and bugs, viruses or other types of malwares, hardware problems, and more.

If your computer is getting slower, it does not necessarily mean you have to replace it with a new system. Simple software and hardware tweaks can significantly speed up the Windows 10 experience. Whether your computer has modern or older configuration the following guide helps you sort out the machine with noticeable changes.

1. Restart your computer.
Restarting your computer will reset the pc, shutdown all running applications, giving you a clean start to optimizing your computer for better performance.

2. Disable startup/background apps
In Windows 10 some of the applications register themselves automatically and they start running in the background consuming a lot of memory adversely affecting the overall performance of the computer. To disable these applications: –

  • Open Settings => go to Apps => click Startup,

as shown below.

3. Disable background Apps
Besides the startup apps, in windows 10 other applications and services can continue to run and to speed the performance of the computer, allow on important and necessary applications to run in the background. This as well helps reduce the consumption of RAM memory.

To achieve this: open Settings => got to Privacy => then Background Apps. Turn off all apps that you do not want them to run in the background or the ones that you do not actively use.

4. Uninstall unimportant apps.
Most of the time, new computers come with applications installed that you don’t use, including the usual bloatware and system tools which you will never use. In trying to optimize your computer to increase performance you require uninstalling these applications as they will waste you space and resources.

Open Settings => go to Apps => then Apps & Features.¬†Uninstall all applications that you don’t use.

5. Clean up your hard drive space
Whether your pc is using traditional hard disk drive (HDD) or solid-state drive (SSD), it’s not wise to run the operating system on the full use of the disk drive as this may adversely affect the overall performance of the computer. It can be noticeable through apps, file management (trying to open or close them), and or tasks struggling to complete (not responding), and the result is the drive is running out of space. Ultimately evident when the drive is around 75% – 80% full.

You may require to optimize the C: drive, delete the unnecesary and temporary files. To free up space

  • Clean up the drive: open Settings => go to System => then Storage

  • Click Remove Files button. Delete any unnecessary data, files you don’t need including emptying the recycle bin.

6. Run a scanning for malware

When your computer starts to perform slow, even if optimized with the above the steps, the result may be of computer being infected by viruses, spyware, and other malware types which will be taking up may resources and computer memory. Hence:

  • Update the Windows Defender
  • Run Microsoft Defender Full Scan
  • Run Microsoft Defender Offline Scan

On your computer:

  • click Start button
  • search for “Windows Security”
  • click on Virus & threat protection
  • Under the “Virus & threat protection updates” section, click the “Check for updates” option.

  • Click on Virus & threat protection from the left pane.
  • Under the “Current threats” section, click the Scan options option.
  • Select and perform Full Scan

 

Microsoft Defender Offline scan

If you can’t use the default antivirus because it’s not running, updates aren’t working, or scanning issues exist, the device most likely has one of those complex viruses that can’t be uninstalled while the system is operating. If this is the case, the antivirus software can run an offline scan.

  • Under the “Current threats” section, click the Scan options option.

 

  • Select the “Microsoft Defender Offline scan”

 

7. Check for Windows Update
Microsoft publishes updates on a regular basis to resolve issues, add new features, and patch security vulnerabilities. While updates are sometimes the cause of problems, keeping them up to date can help your computer run faster. To install updates manually on Windows 10:

  • Open Settings => Update & Security => Windows Update => then Check for updates.

8. Disable system visual effects
There are many visual effects found in Windows 10, from animations to shadows that improve the visual appearance to be more appealing and they consume more resource which results pc to slow down in its performance. You may however require turning off these effects to conserve resources and make Windows 10 faster.

Disable visual effects:

  • Go to Settings => System. => then About
  • Under the “Related settings” section, click on “Advanced system settings”

On the pop-up that comes, go to Advanced Tab and click on Settings¬†under “Performance” section.

Click Visual effects and select “Adjust for best performance” to disable all visual effects. select on minimal effects to increase the performance of the computer.

When you are done, click Apply then OK.
